Private Equity Strengthens Companies And Supports Growth In All 50 States

WASHINGTON – Private equity firms invested over $625 billion in more than 3,700 U.S.-based companies last year, according to the 2015 Top States and Districts analysis released today by the American Investment Council (AIC). This annual analysis ranks the top 20 states and congressional districts by investment value and number of investments.

Illinois received the most investment from private equity (measured in dollars invested) totaling $94.6 billion in 193 companies, followed by California, New York, Texas, and Georgia. Illinois’ 9th congressional district, represented by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, received $56.3 billion and ranked as the top district for private equity investment. Congressional districts represented by Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12), Danny K. Davis (IL-7), David Schweikert (AZ-6), and Scott H. Peters (CA-52) rounded out the top five.

“It’s remarkable that private equity invests in every state and nearly every congressional district in our country,” said AIC President and CEO Mike Sommers. “This investment has helped to support over 4.5 million jobs across the United States. Our report highlights how our industry is unlocking critical capital that is deployed over the long-term.”

“Year after year, we find that private equity works to improve both large and small businesses across a wide variety of industries,” said Bronwyn Bailey, Vice President of Research and Investor Relations. “We are proud to show the importance of private equity within our economy and how it’s essential to numerous brands and the services that we use every day.”
